Let’s focus on amazing things that bring us together

Recently, I had another glimpse of a depressing news segment informing us AGAIN that everyone is divided. Dread, shrill, angry messaging. Enough!

My first thought was: How did we get here?

Followed by: Why would we want to be here?

And finally:  “Who decided it was a good idea to insult or upset others just because they have a different point of view?”

Such a waste of time and energy.

As Tayor Swift sings, “You need to calm down!”

Maybe she’s a young billionaire who attracts thousands to her concerts because she knows a thing or two.

Then … a few days later, Pope Francis, the loving and caring leader of the Catholic church, passed away – and I was reminded of his many words of wisdom, including, “Build bridges not walls.”

So I got to thinking … There are so many bridges we travel across everyday that bring us joy, satisfaction and positive energy. Let’s take a detour and redirect to those destinations!

Allow me to illustrate:

Bridge 1 – Music

A few years ago, I attended a Janet Jackson concert outside of Boston. The enthusiastic crowd spanned at least three generations. I never saw so many people have such a wonderful time singing and dancing all without any incident.

Note: While many people have differing tastes in music, I have never heard anyone say, “I don’t talk to her anymore because she likes (insert genre) music.” Think about it.

Bridge 2 – Sports

More than just about anything, I love to watch the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics. Team USA always delights thanks to our multi-nationality teams. Need a good swimmer, skater, basketball player, sprinter, etc.? You will find that talent on Team USA.

Note:  Though I have witnessed some highly heated sports conversations, I have never heard anyone say, “We don’t talk to him anymore because he likes the Pittsburgh Steelers.” Have you?

Bridge 3 – Art

We have a “Mix” event the first Friday of every month at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The event is popular and usually sells out (i.e., 2,000 attendees). Each Mix has a theme, which is typically accompanied by an art exhibit, music, food and drinks to align and celebrate the theme. And just as the name suggests, the crowd is a vast mix of people who dress up, show up and participate in the cultural event together.

Sigh. We are definitely better when we are together!

Or, if you prefer an old proverb: “United we stand, divided we fall.”
