Originally posted December 2010. I keep these early blog posts to remind me where I was at in the first years of learning to run.
Two things going against me:
1) My newest pair of running shoes is trying to shave down my ankle bone for some reason and I think that has caused me to run funny and has had something to do with my knee pains. So today I wore my very first pair of running shoes. Yeah. Bad idea. I know. They’re about 3 years old and have a ton of miles on them. 🙁 The good news is my ankle and knee are A-Okay. For now.
2) My training schedule has been crap. Today was a 16 mile run. Before that, the last run I did was 10 miles 2 weeks ago. Before that, the last run I had done was 12 miles, 2 weeks prior to the 10. You get the idea. I am really asking for injury and pain. The good news? I ran at a slower pace with smaller intervals today and felt great.
Training when it’s raining:
When you wake up to the sound of rain the last thing you think about is gearing up to go for a morning run. Even if it is part of your marathon training schedule. But for some of our team, we train shine or rain. You never know what your event morning will be like and you have to be prepared!
So today was 16 miles. Fortunately it was only about 50 – 55 degrees and the rain wasn’t heavy or constant. It was actually a very pleasant run with a teammate I’ve known since my first season! We kept each other entertained, knowing that there is no way we would have gone the full 16 if we didn’t have a run buddy.
Once I’m out and warmed up, I do like running in the rain. It reminds me of growing up in Tillamook, Oregon, the land of floods, stumps, and septic pumps. Oh, and the best dairy products from the happiest population of holstein cows I’ve ever seen. But seriously, lots of rain and green trees and rivers. Today we ran up by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. There were some nice green areas and some rain water washing down from the mountains.
I managed to get a tan on my legs. My toenail cut through my favorite pair of running socks. My body is tired but nothing hurts. The Phoenix full marathon is about a month away.
My current training goals:
1) Get new socks and some mole skin for my new running shoes.
2) Run every day during my vacation in Texas.
