There were flag men carrying flags. There was a Statue of Liberty dude. There were people dressed in anything you could imagine that was red, white and blue. There were old men in funny tassel hats driving honky little vehicles that looked like they ran off lawn-mower motors.
What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than to run a 5k in my new city of residence?
Event: Surf City 5k
Good: First run using Runkeeper on my iPhone. It worked well.
Bad: Side-stitches and nearly threw up after I finished.
Course: Nice little run down Main street to PCH and back. Spectators are setting up for the parade early so you end up getting a decent crowd to watch and some cheer as you go by. I always appreciate the cheering. It gives a boost of energy.
I should mention that the race did have a pretty decent little finish area with various drinks and snacks to try. They had chip time, which is always nice. They also printed and posted the results on a board as people came in. It was well run and I will probably do it next year and try to hang out for a while after to enjoy the 4th festivities.
