I’m not big on fireworks, but for the 4th of July I like to run a 5k. Preferably one that takes advantage of a parade route so that I can glean extra energy from a cheering crowd. I run faster to applause.
The problem is, I think I have bad luck at 4th of July 5ks.
The first time I ran one was the 2011 Surf City 5k. That was okay, minus the near barf. Last year I ran it again. I suspected I was getting sick at the time but ran it anyway because…I paid for it. So I ran it, and then paid for it again with weeks of sickness.
I was all set, mentally, for a PR, even though it was hot as hell and I felt off. I’d run 5k distances in under 30 minutes plenty of times, just never in an actual timed race. Well, I finished in 31:11, having stopped to walk through cramps and feeling something awful was happening in my body. I would NOT have ran the race if I would’ve known what evil was coming.
Okay, that was so last year, last state, and 3 moves ago.
Don’t worry – Moxie is just recovering from her spay.
Then this last week I felt off again. Headache-y. Fatigued. The two runs before the race were HORRIBLE, heavy-legged, tummy troubles. I thought about skipping the race. I didn’t pay for it.
But yeah, I went. Of course I went.
I finished in 29:22. First mile was a 9 minute pace. Second was 9:30. Third was 9:50. So no, I didn’t feel my best but…this is my official 5k race PR now! Is it as good as I’m capable of? No. Am I still proud of myself? Yes.
BEST & WORST DRESSED
This is a man who has stories to tell. You can tell by his mustache and his dedication to the stars and stripes. He gets my BEST dressed award. Check out that Spibelt!
This is a man who is looking for stories to tell. Those jeans, though! He had a camera strapped to hist chest (someone find that video on YouTube please). He beat me by 2 minutes! I respect you, cowboy, but still… you get my WORST dressed award.
So tell me…
- What is ONE reason you might run a 5k in the HOT sun wearing full on jeans, long sleeve collared shirt, and a cowboy hat?
- Do you have a “bad luck” race? Or distance?
- Would you rather run a hot 5k or get burned by a firework?
