As this 5K was minutes from my house, I figured there was very little reason not to run it. Who cares that I haven’t run in a month and I’ve been coughing up mucous for weeks? (I know…I know….) I’m glad I ran, though, as this race showed me that, even after all this time, there are still new running experiences to be had.

This event was put on my some local college students as a project for their economics class. One gal told me they’ve been studying running economy and it took me a second to realize she meant $$$ not VO2Max. The proceeds of the event went to a local charity and I must say, they did a good job with the event. About 120 people participated, there were raffle prizes, hot chocolate, snacks, and volunteers kept you from getting lost on the open road course.
Of course I wore my new Run Run Run InknBurn “holiday sweater” for the race. I’m so so so glad I have this top now for all my holiday runs (and parties). Yes, I will totally wear a running top to a holiday party because that’s just the kind of gal I am. And if I weren’t still breastfeeding my child I’d wear sports bras all the time. #canthardlywait
Also, my InknBurn Denim Capris are always fun because people will literally ask me if they’re real jeans or not.
It was actually an ideal morning – dry and about 48 degrees or so? The run in the crisp air felt good (minus two things which I’ll get too) and I kept an easy 10:15 average pace. I really truly have to stop and take a moment to praise God and be grateful for being able to run with absolutely zero foot pain. ‘Twas a time I wasn’t sure that’d be possible again. Anyway…on to the weird stuff.
Two things…jingle boobs and poo pressure. Yes, you read that right. Okay first, they were handing out little round jingle bells to tie onto your laces and I was mortified. I once ran a marathon within earshot of runners wearing jingle bells and I nearly went mad. But I thought I ought to give it a try because holiday spirit, right? I couldn’t get them on my shoes so into my sports bra they went and jingle boobs kind of made me laugh the whole race so…turns out that wasn’t a problem.
Now, about that other thing. A successful #2 pre race is one of the most important race morning to-dos, IMHO. I had confidently crossed that off my list before I left my house…but then…as soon as I started running, I wasn’t so confident. I tried really hard not to let it mess up my running form. It turns out there was no immediate threat but still…an uncomfortable feeling for a 5k.
I love local races. Especially now, living in a smaller town. I feel like these faces will start to become more familiar and my running network will expand with each local race I do. Plus, this is the first time I was every first in my age group! Never mind that there were only 5 of us and I’m not sure the others were really “running” so much as chaperoning the kid’s group or sweeping the race.
Don’t know if I’ll squeeze in another race before the new year, but I am looking forward to a lot more in 2017!
