Training Talk with Coach Henness
I’m sharing a bunch of short videos I made for my clients and subscribers a few years ago. These are my tips, encouragements, and mental strategies for runners but they can also apply to anyone who wants to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.
Most of the clients I’ve worked with over the years are new runners or beginning marathoners. They aren’t looking to win races or set records. When I ask them why they want to work with a coach, the majority say basically, that they think they might be capable of more but don’t know how to go about discovering what they are capable of. And we all have a yearning to discover our potential, don’t we?
So, with that context, this is part of my “answer” to that “question”.
PLEASE NOTE:
There is such a thing as pushing yourself too hard. That’s why I encourage everyone to work with, or at least ask a personal trainer, physical therapist or medical professional about the smartest approach for you as an individual.
If you want to learn more about the principle of adaptation in exercise and sports, look up the SAID principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands).
Ask yourself….
In what other areas of life does growth come from being pushed or stretched outside of our comfort zones?
Think about your life so far, your body, what you’ve fed it and how you’ve treated it.
In what ways have you seen small changes take place over time?
How has your body adapted to your current lifestyle patterns?
What adaptations will your body need to embrace to reach your running and/or lifestyle goals?
