New fitness classes pop up all the time, especially here in southern California. Last year, at the IDEA World Fitness Convention I saw amazing and crazy things at the expo. There are belly-dance inspired fitness classes, Vegas show-girl workouts, and pretty much anything else you can think of. But are they effective ways to reach a higher level of fitness or are they simply a fun way to get non-movers to start moving?
Let’s look at four new fitness trends I tried last month.
Wait, last month?! Yes…at the Jamba Juice event. I promised I’d share more about this and about Venus Williams? Don’t remember? Let’s do a quick photo recap of the Jamba Juice event.
Jamba Juice invited fitness writers in the Los Angeles area to come, drink smoothies, workout with Venus Williams, and learn about new FiTrends.
They also let us take anything we wanted from a giant table of fresh fruits and veggies [which prompted this post on Blender-Ready Smoothie Jars]. As you can see, Gigi, Melissa and I were not shy!
Okay, so that brings us up to speed.
FiTrends with Jamba Juice!
Now, here are a lot of a photos and quick thoughts on the four mini workouts we did that day.
The workouts were about 20 minutes each and gave us a taste of some trendy new spins on the same old sweat. The Pound Fit ladies made us work hard. My quads and calves definitely felt the burn.
I was mainly excited about being able to hit the floor with drumsticks. It was a good feeling. But that was the only really unique thing about it: bright green drumsticks. You still do the same old exercises, like russian twists, but instead of holding a weight or a ball, you do drum roll on either side of your body to the beat of the music.
I think Pound would be effective, especially if you were doing a full hour routine. I felt like I could become a ripped drummer! I wonder when they’ll start to incorporate barrels and glow in the dark paint?
The Hoopnotica class was certainly fun … in a silly, street performer kind of way. I mean, if hula-hoops are your thing and it will get you to move, that’s great! Do it! And if you’re going from zero activity to this, it will benefit you for sure.
However, for most people this type of thing will eventually stop giving you results. Once you’ve mastered the rhythm and coordination to move with the hoop, you can do all the tricks without expending much energy. I love this as a gateway fitness class or kids class, but think it has it’s limitations.
Oh, Pop Physique. To be fair, I did the groupon a while back and them classes are legit! They do a lot of bodyweight work, resistance bands, and you will burn and sweat for sure. Anyway, the routine we did at the Jamba Juice FiTrends Expo involved a little pink ball and lots of pelvic thrusting. Sigh. It was no where near as good as the classes in their studio.
That being said, I have an ish with these folks. Did you check out their website? What’s with the skinny white girl’s butts in underwear?! As I’m not really into the sexy-underwear-dancer workout thing, I’m surprised I ever did the groupon. Yet, it’s weird because the actual classes in their studio are nothing like that. Just regular figured women, fully clothed, getting their sweat on. It just seems weird to me. So…hate their “image”, but their workouts do work.
And that brings us to Surfset. These unique surfboard platforms require mucho balance and will make your stabilizers burn just trying to stand on it without falling off. So of course they make you do squats, and burpees on it!
Now, I have NEVER surfed before. I’m scurred. Strangely enough, 10 minutes on these boards made me feel slightly more inclined to try real surfing someday. Maybe. Anyway, this was a super short demo but they mix in surfing movements with tabata style routines. I can’t see doing this as a regular fitness class but I also don’t see why many people couldn’t benefit from it.
Check out Lindsay! She actually surfs. She does it all, really.
Surfset is super tiny as far as a fitness trend. I think it’s only available at a few SoCal beaches right now and not the ones near me. I think this will be one of those cool fitness things you do when you visit SoCal and want to workout on the beach. I could see instructors throwing buckets of water on you mid workout to make you feel more alive in your duck dive!
Actually…why surf for reals when you can just do this? More sweat, less drowning.
Eleven By Venus Mention
[FYI: I wore my Janji top and Athleta capris that day.]
To make this most excellent sweaty day even more sweet, I won a new fitness outfit from Venus William’s clothing line, Eleven by Venus!
This top is awesome! I had to send it in and exchange it for a different size (which is partially why it took me so long to write this…couldn’t post without the photo of the full outfit!).
What do you think?
- Do any of these new fitness classes strike you as the next big thing or just a fun alternative way to move?
- What new fitness classes have you tried or do you want to try?
- What do you prefer: a highly effective workout that might be less “fun” OR a super fun workout that delivers fewer results?
