When I finally got hip to the blend and started adding veggies to my post-workout smoothies, I was a new woman. Sure, I started out with trace amounts of spinach and half scoops of wheatgrass powder, but it wasn’t long before I started going full kale. Well, I’ve got two fun recipes for you today that make it stupid easy to smuggle in some green goodness.
Doesn’t that look ammmmmazing? It was. Baby J thought so too and let me know with a few swift punches to my bladder. Yay for 37 weeks pregnant.
Hemp Protein Smoothie
Okay, so today’s recipes are made possible by a really convenient hemp protein smoothie powder that comes in three flavors: Chocolate, Mixed Berry & Vanilla Chia. Don’t worry, I sip and tell just what I think about each flavor.
[Hemp? Why and what are the benefits? Read this post.]
Manitoba Harvest has made it EASY TO BE GREEN by adding organic kale, broccoli and spinach to the powder. Plus, each serving (of 30 grams) has 15 grams of plant-based protein.
Now I’m just a few scoops away from a great green smoothie, like this one!
Chocolate Banana Coconut Smoothie Recipe
I highly recommend a coconut milk for this one. I find the chocolate a touch too subtle. Maybe I’d add a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder next time, but I’m a chocolate junkie.
I like “fixing” a smoothie. I feel really savvy when I add tasty things (like coconut and banana) and tinker with the ingredients. Problem is, smoothies with fruit can get really sweet really fast.
Which brings me to my favorite thing about Hemp Protein Smoothie:
IT’S NOT TOO SWEET!
The Hemp Protein Smoothie powder has a little organic coconut sugar to help the flavor shine, but it’s also pretty nutty and green too, which I love! More on that with the next recipe.

INGREDIENTS
Blend up the following:
- 1 cup frozen berry blend
- 8 to 10 ounces liquid*
- 3 tbs Hemp Protein Smoothie Mixed Berry
- 1 tbs chia seeds
Garnish with your choices of fruits, nuts and seeds. I used:
- Strawberry slices
- Banana slices
- Sunflower seeds
- Coconut shavings
- Chia seeds
The Mixed Berry flavor is also subtle but I love how versatile that makes it. Again, you can definitely taste a hint of the greens in this smoothie bowl, but that’s what makes it so good!
During my “food revival” period, when I experimented with strange vegetables in my CSA box, my tastebuds underwent an extreme makeover. As I ate more and more whole fruits and veggies and less processed foods with added sugars, I started like that green, grassy taste. It’s rejuvenating, wholesome, and healthful.
Have you ever eaten something and immediately felt MORE ALIVE?
It’s like that.
What about Vanilla Chai?
Oh, don’t fear my dear. I did not forget. Honestly, if you’re going to boast a flavor like “Vanilla Chai”, then it’d better be good. Vanilla, as a flavor, is so…well, vanilla. But Vanilla Chai is exciting! And I had my doubts that this flavor would be chai-mazing enough.
I went straight, basic shaker on this flavor. And yeah, the chai does pop! It’s still subtle but the flavor is there, making this very easy to drink as is. And yeah, I think I might just chug the rest of the Vanilla Chai powder this way!
