Goods From the Woods & Jord Watch Review

December 4, 2018 Leave a Comment

Time has flown and it’s December already! I have belated news. Last summer we moved to a log cabin home on 7 forested acres. I’m constantly discovering the versatility of goods from the woods. So I’ll share about some of that, along with a luxury wooden watch brand, Jord (pronounced Yode). To reward you for reading/following me online, I also have a giveaway for a $100 gift card toward a Jord Wooden Watch of your choice. So read to the end, my friend!

DISCLAIMER: I received a free watch in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and ideas are my own.

Living in the Woods

This is a dream come true. We have wanted to live closer to nature, grow our own food, teach our kids to live more self-sustainably (learning as we go). Last spring a property became available that checked nearly all of our boxes; 5+ acres, forested, log cabin style home, well water, seasonal creek, fruit trees, fenced garden, less than 30 minutes from town. We moved in at the beginning of July!

Oh, I’m 30 weeks pregnant, by the way. It’s a boy.

I look forward to our littles running wild in the woods like I did as a girl; to trail running outside my own front door; to stewarding our little piece of the woods and living off our land as much as possible. I cannot believe we get to live here!

Goods from the Woods

As I get to know our property, I see resources everywhere. Blackberry trail snacks in the summer, autumn leaves providing ground cover for our planting beds over winter, and a marvelous thing called lichen (usually pronounced “liken”).

On a recent lichen lift. This is called Usnea, or “Old Man’s Beard”

I thought I’d try Christmas crafting with it; here’s a rustic mini Christmas Wreath with two kinds of lichen and fir branches also found on our forest floor. I might add some pine cones later.

As I googled more ideas, I learned certain kinds of lichen have medicinal properties as well! Also, people buy lichen by the ounce to craft their own terrariums, fairy gardens or make floral arrangements. Perhaps I can even make a buck by simply picking up what the wind has blown down?

Our trees can shelter, heat, feed, heal and make us some cash! What else can they do? Well, with brilliant engineering, wood from a variety of trees can also help us keep time and enhance our personal style. Here is what the geniuses at Jord can do when they combine nature with technology.

Unique Wooden Wristwatch

Jord Watches come with a cedar humidor storage box.

Jord is a luxury wooden watch company from St. Louis, Missouri, that began crafting timepieces in 2013. The scandinavian word “jord” (pronounced “yode”) means “earth” or “land”. Jord watchmakers mix natural and reclaimed materials with quality movements to produce these distinct, sophisticated designs.

When Jord asked me to partner with them, I loved the idea of wearing nature wherever I go. I’m not an accessorizer; I don’t wear jewelry just for the sake of jewelry. However, watches have a practical use and one that’s made from wood seemed like the ideal way to commemorate our first year of forest living and enjoying the goods from the woods.

Cora Watch in Zebrawood & Turquoise

Cora Timepiece Features

I chose the Cora timepiece for it’s self-winding automatic drive system (i.e. no batteries required) and smooth face-to-band shape that won’t catch on sleeves or anything my toddler tries to lasso me with.

Cora comes in 3 color ways, but the turquoise watch face spoke to me. The color reminds me of the abundance of rain in Oregon, making everything green with life!

The wooden links and case are made with natural zebrawood from West Africa that has been pretreated with tung oils to protect and preserve. It is incredibly lightweight so I haven’t felt like I need time to “adjust to it”. It just feels….natural! My favorite thing about zebrawood is the high contrast grain. It isn’t boring, it isn’t cheap-looking, and it blends well whether I’m wearing blacks or browns.

Planning my outfit. Stay tuned for more info on the origins of this sweatshirt!

The watch face itself adds a hint of glamor. Beneath the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, there are 8 swarovski markers and a sexy little “window” peeking into the watch mechanism itself. Hey there tiny, turning cogs! These curious details make everyone want a closer look.

Two ways to peek inside the mechanics of the Cora Watch!

Finally, there is a secret sweetness to the Cora watch. Instead of a solid plate on the watch back, there is another piece of sapphire crystal glass showing the intricate inner mechanics. It’s like lumberjack chic meets steampunk. The delicately engraved rotor (the free-swinging weight that “winds” the watch as it moves with the motion of your arm) is a nice touch.

In addition to all the great things I mentioned above, Jord Watches come with a cedar humidor box for safe storage. It has a bottom drawer for keeping the cleaning cloth and specially formulated wood treatment gel they send you as well. You also get a 1 year warranty where defects in their workmanship are repaired free of charge!
